The phrase has a couple of meanings depending on the context in which it is used, but the general meaning is that you don’t have to be pretentious or feel pressured to live up to western influences because this is South Africa and not America.

The term was popularised by Kwesta in his track Spirit and most recently Cassper Nyovest with his track Hase Mo States.
